Femmes du monde à Côte-des-Neiges is a women’s centre deeply rooted in its neighbourhood and a feminist, inclusive, and intercultural community space. The Centre welcomes women and non-binary people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and circumstances, and works to create spaces for solidarity, participation, support, and collective action.
We are currently undergoing a period of organizational reflection and restructuring. We are rethinking how we work, our programming, our services, our membership and community life, and how we want to bring our mission to life in the coming years.
In this context, we are looking for a Community Organizer who is interested not only in contributing to the Centre’s activities and day-to-day life, but also in actively participating in this period of transformation.
The position is expected to evolve alongside the organization. We are therefore looking for someone who is curious, independent, and committed, and who enjoys working in an environment where there is room to propose ideas, experiment, and build collectively.
The Role
The Community Organizer helps make Femmes du monde a vibrant, welcoming, and empowering community space.
The person works directly with members to encourage their participation, support their initiatives, and create spaces where people can connect, reflect together, strengthen their agency, and take part in decisions that shape the life of the Centre.
The role brings together community engagement, facilitation, mobilization, popular education, collective action, and member participation.
Main Responsibilities
Community Life and Support
- Maintain an active and approachable presence in the Centre’s community space and build meaningful relationships with members;
- Welcome, listen to, and accompany individuals through their different experiences and processes, using an intersectional feminist approach that promotes autonomy and empowerment;
- Provide short-term psychosocial support, information, and referrals tailored to individual needs;
- Encourage members’ participation and involvement in the Centre’s daily life;
- Support member-led initiatives and encourage members’ autonomy in organizing activities;
- Help maintain a warm, accessible, safe, and welcoming environment that respects diversity.
Activities, Workshops, and Popular Education
- Participate in the planning and development of the Centre’s programming;
- Design, organize, and facilitate workshops, discussions, activities, and collective spaces;
- Develop activities based on the needs, interests, and concerns expressed by members;
- Use feminist popular education approaches that encourage knowledge-sharing and meaningful participation by all.
Mobilization and Collective Action
- Create spaces where members can discuss the social and political issues that affect their lives;
- Support the transformation of individual concerns into collective reflection and action;
- Mobilize members around collective initiatives, campaigns, consultations, demonstrations, and events;
- Participate in collective actions and represent the Centre when relevant;
- Help bring feminist, intersectional, and anti-racist perspectives to the issues faced by women and non-binary people.
Member Participation and Democratic Life
- Encourage members’ involvement in the Centre’s various decision-making bodies and participatory spaces;
- Support the development of member committees and self-organized initiatives;
- Contribute to discussions on how to ensure members have meaningful influence over the Centre’s direction and daily life;
- Participate in team meetings, reflection days, and collective planning processes.
A Role That Will Evolve
Femmes du monde is currently going through an important period of organizational restructuring. Several aspects of how we operate are being reconsidered, and the person joining our team will be invited to actively contribute to this reflection process.
We hope the role will evolve according to the Centre’s needs, the strengths of the person hired, and the directions that emerge from the restructuring process.
For someone interested in making a longer-term commitment, this period may offer opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and grow within the organization.
Who We’re Looking For
Above all, we are looking for someone who:
- Shares the Centre’s feminist, intersectional, anti-racist, and inclusive values;
- Enjoys working with people and building relationships based on collaboration;
- Has a strong ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences;
- Feels comfortable in a community environment where no two days are exactly alike;
- Takes initiative while working collaboratively;
- Has strong facilitation and community mobilization skills;
- Is willing to reflect critically on their practice and receive feedback;
- Is interested in issues affecting immigrant and racialized women, poverty, housing, violence, access to services, and different forms of discrimination;
- Wants to contribute to building and transforming an organization rather than simply filling a fully predefined role.
Assets
- Experience in community organizing, mobilization, facilitation, feminist intervention, popular education, or the community sector;
- Experience working in a women’s centre or community organization;
- Knowledge of the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood and its communities;
- Experience facilitating groups or organizing collective actions;
- Ability to work in multiple languages.
We also recognize the value of lived experience, community-based knowledge, and activist experience. A non-traditional professional or academic background is therefore not a barrier to applying.
