Objective

The Quartier allié contre les violences genrées (Neighborhood Alliance Against Gender-Based Violence) project, born out of a joint initiative between the Côte-des-Neiges Women’s Center and the borough, aims to raise awareness among the residents of Côte-des-Neiges and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce about the issues surrounding domestic violence.

The project began in 2021 and ended in 2025. We were able to carry it out thanks to financial support from the Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough and the Ministère de l’emploi et de la solidarité sociale.

The aim of this project was to raise awareness among the communities of Côte-des-Neiges and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce about gender-based violence by promoting healthy relationships, encouraging active reporting, offering support to victims, strengthening the social fabric, establishing local partnerships, and adopting an innovative approach to eradicating violence and building resilient neighborhoods.

Activities

Among the many activities carried out as part of this project, we can mention the implementation of an awareness campaign highlighting three types of violence that are often overlooked: technological violence, psychological violence, and economic violence.

During the first year, this campaign was displayed in the metro and on buses in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. We also gave various training and awareness workshops to community workers and set up booths in schools, parks, and other locations throughout the borough.

We then continued to raise awareness among various community stakeholders, such as merchants and the general public. We organized a major event with guests who work and advocate in the field of gender-based violence. This event was the first episode of our podcast. We also relaunched the awareness campaign by adding three new types of violence: sexual, verbal, and religious violence. Banners were displayed throughout the neighborhood.

Public awareness tools

As part of the project, we have developed tools to raise awareness about different forms of violence

  • We have a podcast, Paroles d’allié-e-s (Words from allies), which addresses issues of gender-based violence and its impact on those who experience it.

Podcast from the “Quartiers Alliés pour _____” project

Our goal is to create a strong network of allies among all social actors, from young people to citizens to local businesses. We firmly believe in an intersectional feminist approach that recognizes and addresses the different forms of discrimination that women and gender-diverse people may face because of their gender identity, but also because of their ethnicity, migration history, sexual orientation, and other aspects of their identity.
